Net worth is the single number that tells you whether you're getting richer. In Europe, calculating it is unusually messy: you might have a Deutsche Bank salary account, a Revolut card, a BNP Paribas savings account, a private pension at PensionBee, a brokerage at Trade Republic, a few ETFs at Interactive Brokers, some crypto, and a Revolut GBP balance.
The four ingredients of net worth
- Cash & accounts — current accounts, savings, foreign currency balances
- Investments — ETFs, stocks, funds at Trade Republic, Saxo, IBKR, DEGIRO
- Pension — workplace and private pension pots, including any preserved benefits from previous employers
- Other assets — crypto, real estate, vehicles minus liabilities
The multi-currency problem
If you hold GBP or USD alongside EUR, you need a consistent FX snapshot. Pick one base currency (usually EUR) and one rate source (e.g. ECB rates or your broker), and apply it consistently across every snapshot.
Three ways to do it
1. The spreadsheet
A monthly Google Sheet works. Manual but auditable. The downside: you'll forget, miss months, and lose the trend line.
2. Your bank app
Most European banks show you only what's at that bank. Useless for a true net worth view.
3. A European-native finance app
Finch connects to all your European banks (via PSD2 Open Banking), your brokers, your pension provider, and your crypto exchanges, and continuously calculates your net worth in EUR — with GBP/USD positions automatically converted at live rates.
What "good" tracking looks like
- One base currency (EUR), live FX
- Monthly snapshots, automatically captured
- Breakdown by asset class and by currency
- Year-over-year and month-over-month deltas
- Pension assets included — they're real wealth
